What do you need?

What is an electrical panel upgrade in an Australian home?

You may see "200 amp panel upgrade" in overseas articles. In Australia the same job is usually called a switchboard upgrade or a meter box upgrade. It replaces the old board that holds your main switch, circuit breakers and safety switches, also called RCDs.

Homes here are normally described as single-phase or three-phase, and the rating of the main switch and the supply matters more than one headline number. A new switchboard sorts the circuits properly, adds protection where it is missing and leaves space for new circuits.

If you want an electrical panel upgrade in Darwin, the first question is whether your supply and your board can handle the loads you plan to add. We look at the board, the supply and your plans, then explain what is needed.

How do I know my switchboard needs replacing?

Some signs are easy to spot and some are not. Check for these.

  • Ceramic fuses or old rewirable fuse holders instead of circuit breakers.
  • No safety switches, or only one for the whole house.
  • Breakers that trip often, or feel warm.
  • Scorch marks, a burning smell or crackling.
  • Rust, corrosion or signs of water in the box.
  • Ants, geckos or other pests nesting inside.
  • No spare space for a new circuit.

Older boards can also contain materials that need careful handling. Some boards from earlier decades used backing panels that may contain asbestos. If you suspect this, do not drill or cut it. Tell the electrician before work starts so it is handled properly.

Why do Darwin switchboards wear out faster?

Heat, humidity and storms all take a toll. Meter boxes sit outside, often in full sun or at the edge of a carport. Salt in the air near the coast speeds up corrosion. Moisture can creep in through cable entries during the wet season, and insects love a warm, dry corner.

Loads have also grown. A home that once ran a few fans and one air conditioner may now run split systems in every bedroom, an electric hot water system, a pool pump and an induction cooktop. Add rooftop solar, a battery or an EV charger and an old board can struggle.

A modern board with correct protection can also reduce nuisance tripping when it is paired with proper testing of the circuits it protects.

We do not give prices on a web page, because two switchboards can need very different work. These factors drive the quote.

  • Single-phase or three-phase supply, and whether a change is needed.
  • The number of circuits and safety switches required.
  • Whether the board is inside, outside or in a tight spot.
  • The condition of the existing wiring that connects to it.
  • Whether sub-boards or a new meter box are involved.
  • Any work needed by the network provider, such as disconnecting and reconnecting supply.

A straightforward replacement is usually a day's work, but the power is off during much of it. Bigger jobs take longer. Plan for the power to be off at times and tell us about medical equipment, fridges and work-from-home needs in advance.

What happens on the day, and who should I talk to first?

We confirm the plan, switch off supply as agreed, remove the old board, install the new one, label each circuit and test every protection device. You see the result before we leave, and we explain how to test your safety switches.

Electrical work in the Northern Territory generally has to be done by a person holding the correct licence, and some work needs a compliance certificate or network approval. Rules differ for different jobs, so ask your electrician to show you their licence details and explain what paperwork applies. Do not hire someone who cannot.

If the board is old, worn wiring may sit behind it. Look at our rewiring page to see when it makes sense to do both. If the board has already failed, start with emergency electrician. Otherwise return to the home page and send a quick enquiry.

Questions about electrical in Darwin

Is a 200 amp panel the same as a switchboard upgrade?

The 200 amp panel is a US term. In Australia, homes are described by single-phase or three-phase supply and the rating of the main switch, and the work is called a switchboard upgrade. The goal is the same: a safe board that can handle the loads in your home. We look at your supply and your plans to suggest what suits.

Do I need safety switches on every circuit?

Safety switches (RCDs) protect people from electric shock and are an important part of a modern board. Requirements depend on the work and the rules at the time of installation. A good rule is to ask your electrician to explain which circuits are protected and which are not, and why. We can do this at the quote stage.

Can I add solar or a battery with my current board?

Sometimes, but not always. The board needs space, the correct protection, and enough capacity on the supply. Solar and batteries also involve network approvals and equipment rules. Tell us your plan before you buy a system, so you can find out if a board upgrade should come first.

Will the power be off during the upgrade?

Yes, for part of the job. The old board has to be disconnected, so lights, fans and air conditioning will be off at times. We agree a plan with you beforehand, so you can arrange for fridges, medical equipment and work needs. A working day is a common allowance for a simple replacement, but the real time depends on the site.

How do I check an electrician is licensed in the NT?

Ask for their licence details and check them with the NT regulator, NT WorkSafe, which covers electrical licensing. Also ask for proof of insurance. Reputable tradespeople are happy to provide both. If a quote is far below the others, ask what is left out before you agree.
