What counts as an electrical emergency in Darwin?

Some faults can wait for a normal booking. Others cannot. If you can smell burning, see scorch marks, hear buzzing or crackling from a board or power point, or feel a tingle from a tap or appliance, treat it as urgent.

If there is fire, heavy smoke, or someone has had an electric shock, call 000 first. Do not call a tradesperson ahead of the emergency services.

Other situations that usually need prompt attention include a main switch that will not stay on, a safety switch that trips again as soon as you reset it, water inside a switchboard or power point, and a power point or light that is hot to touch. Total power loss in just your home, while neighbours still have power, is also worth a call.

What should I do while I wait for the electrician?

Keep yourself safe first

  • Stay away from any wet area near the fault. Do not touch a wet switchboard.
  • If it is safe and dry, switch off the affected circuit or the main switch.
  • Unplug appliances from the affected power points, but only if the plug and the area are dry.
  • Keep children and pets clear.
  • Do not keep resetting a safety switch that trips straight back.

If a power line is down in the street or across your fence, stay well back and report it to the network operator, Power and Water Corporation, or the emergency services. Never go near it, even after a storm has passed.

Take a photo of anything visible, such as scorching or a damaged fitting. It helps us understand the problem before we arrive.

What causes sudden electrical faults in Darwin homes?

The tropics are tough on wiring. Humidity and driving rain find the weak points, and the storm season brings lightning, surges and fallen branches.

  • Moisture in outdoor fittings. Verandah lights, outdoor power points and pump or pool circuits can leak current to earth during the wet season.
  • Lightning and surges. A nearby strike can damage appliances, air conditioners and electronics, and sometimes trips the main safety switch.
  • Overloaded circuits. Several split systems, a dryer and a kettle on the same ageing board can overheat a circuit.
  • Ageing cables. Heat in roof spaces dries out older insulation over time.
  • Pests. Geckos, ants and rodents can short out a board or chew cabling.

Often the fix is small, such as replacing a failed fitting. Sometimes it points to a bigger issue. A tired board may suit a switchboard upgrade, and degraded cabling may call for rewiring.

We cannot give an honest time before we know what is wrong. A failed safety switch or a damaged power point can be handled in a short visit. Storm damage, burnt wiring or a failed board can take longer, and may need parts that are not on the truck.

The cost depends on the access to the fault, whether parts are needed, how many circuits are affected, whether the job is urgent, and whether the repair is a quick fix or a proper replacement. For anything beyond a small repair, we explain the options and the price in writing before we do the work.

Be wary of anyone who quotes a firm number over the phone for a fault they have not seen. Electrical faults need testing before anyone can be sure what is wrong.

What happens after the immediate fault is fixed?

Once the hazard is dealt with and power is restored, we talk through what caused it and how to avoid a repeat. That might be as simple as weather-sealing an outdoor fitting. It might be a suggestion to add surge protection, or to look at the state of the board.

Ask for a copy of any paperwork that applies to the repair. If your electrician is required to provide a compliance certificate for the work, you should receive it. Keep it with your insurance and property records. If the damage came from a storm, your insurer may ask for an electrician's report, so ask for one in writing.

Questions about electrical in Darwin

What should I do if my power goes out only at my house?

First check whether your neighbours have power. If they do, look at your switchboard. If a safety switch or breaker has tripped, switch off appliances on that circuit, then try to reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician. If the main switch will not stay on, do not force it. Wet switchboards should not be touched.

Is a burning smell from a power point an emergency?

Yes, treat it seriously. A burning smell can mean overheated wiring or a loose connection, which can start a fire. If there is visible smoke or fire, leave the house and call 000. If there is only a smell, switch off the circuit if it is safe and dry, stay clear of the area and call an electrician.

Can lightning damage my electrical system?

It can. Lightning in the build-up and wet season can cause surges that damage air conditioners, appliances and electronics. It may also trip safety switches or damage the board. After a close strike, if appliances fail or something smells burnt, switch off and ask an electrician to test before you use the circuit again.

Why do my safety switches trip during heavy rain?

Water is getting into something. Typical culprits are outdoor power points, garden lights, an exhaust fan or an old fitting in the roof. Unplug items on that circuit and reset the switch. If it holds, one of the items was the cause. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the wiring itself needs testing by an electrician.

Do you give a price before you start work?

For anything beyond a simple repair, yes. We explain what we found and what the options are, and give you a written quote before we continue. If there is a hazard that needs to be made safe first, we tell you what that involves and why. You decide how to proceed.
