What does EV charger installation involve?

A home charger is a wall-mounted unit connected to your switchboard by its own circuit. It is not the same as plugging a car into a normal power point. A dedicated circuit has the right cable size, protection and isolation for hours of continuous use.

Overseas, you will see "Level 2" chargers. In Australia the common plug is Type 2, and most electric cars sold here, including Teslas, use it. A "universal" charger usually just means a Type 2 charger that works with any compatible car.

For EV charger installation in Darwin, the steps are simple: check the board and supply, choose a location, run the cable, fit the unit, test and show you how it works.

How fast will my car charge at home?

Speed depends on three things: the charger, the supply to your house and the car's onboard charger.

  • Single-phase homes commonly suit a charger of around 7 kW, which adds a meaningful amount of range overnight.
  • Three-phase homes can suit faster units, often up to 11 kW or 22 kW depending on the car, which can only accept what its own onboard charger allows.

Many Darwin households find that overnight charging at a modest rate is plenty. Faster is not always needed. We look at how far you drive and when you can plug in, then match the charger to the real need rather than the biggest unit.

Will my switchboard handle an EV charger?

This is the most common question, and the honest answer is that it depends. A charger can draw a lot of power for hours. If the board is crowded with split systems, a pool pump and an electric hot water system, there may not be enough capacity.

We check the main switch rating, spare space, the condition of the board and the load already on it. Sometimes a small adjustment is enough. Sometimes a board change is the right answer, and our switchboard upgrade page explains that work. Some homes can use load management, which slows the charger when other appliances are heavy.

Network approval may be needed for larger loads or when solar and batteries are involved. We explain what is required before you commit.

Placement matters in the tropics. Direct sun and rain on equipment shorten its life. A shaded wall, a carport or the side of a garage is better than an exposed spot. Elevated houses often have a parking area underneath, which can be a good, sheltered place for a charger, though cable runs from the board need planning.

  • Choose a spot close to where the car parks, to keep cable runs short.
  • Pick a sheltered wall with good ventilation.
  • Use outdoor-rated equipment and weatherproof fittings.
  • Think about where the charging cable will lie so no one trips on it.

If you have rooftop solar, ask about timing charging to daytime production or a battery.

What changes the price, and how long does it take?

Price depends on the charger you choose, how far the unit is from the board, whether the cable runs through walls, floors or underground, whether the board needs changes, and whether the supply has to be altered. We give a written quote after we have seen the site.

A simple install close to a healthy board can be a short job. A long cable run or a board upgrade takes more time. The power is switched off for part of the work, so plan for that.

Ask any electrician to show their NT licence details and explain what compliance paperwork applies. If your charger work sits alongside new circuits, our lighting installation page covers outdoor lighting for the same area. For general questions, return to the home page or call (08) 5550 3088.

Questions about electrical in Darwin

Can I just plug my EV into a normal power point?

Many cars come with a portable cable for a standard power point, but it is slow and puts continuous load on a circuit and a plug that may not be designed for it. A dedicated charger circuit is safer for regular use. If you must use a power point briefly, have the circuit checked by an electrician first.

Will a Type 2 charger work with my Tesla?

In Australia, Teslas use the Type 2 connector for AC charging, and so do most other electric cars. That means a Type 2 charger should suit them. Always confirm with your vehicle manual or the manufacturer, since connector and onboard charger details vary by model and year.

Do I need three-phase power for a home charger?

No. Many homes charge well on single-phase supply with a charger of around 7 kW. Three-phase can allow faster charging if the car supports it. We check your supply and your daily driving, then explain whether three-phase would give a real benefit.

Can I charge my car from solar panels?

Yes, in many setups. Some chargers can adjust to follow solar output, and a battery can store daytime energy for the evening. Systems differ, and network rules apply, so tell us what you have or plan to buy so we can explain what works with it.

Does charger installation need approvals?

It depends on the installation. Work must be done by a person with the correct NT electrical licence, and a compliance certificate or network notification may be required. We explain what applies to your job at the quote stage. If in doubt, ask Power and Water Corporation or NT WorkSafe.
