What do you need?

Electrician installing a ceiling fan in a Darwin living room

What lighting work can an electrician do for my home?

Lighting is more than swapping a bulb. New fittings often need new wiring, new switches and a check on the circuit behind them. We handle lighting installation in Darwin for living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, verandahs and gardens.

  • LED downlights, which are the Australian name for recessed lights.
  • Ceiling fans with or without lights.
  • Pendants and feature lights.
  • Outdoor and landscape lighting, including garden and path lights.
  • Sensor lights, security lights and switches or dimmers.

If you only want a light replaced, we can do that too. If the job grows into extra circuits, we will explain why before we add anything.

Which lights and fans suit a Darwin home?

Ceiling fans do a lot of the work in a tropical house, and good ones move air quietly at several speeds. Choose the size to suit the room. A fan that is too small does little, and one hung too low is unsafe and noisy. On verandahs and open areas, use fans rated for damp or outdoor use.

For rooms, LED lights use little power, which helps when the air conditioner is already running hard. Pick the colour of the light to suit the room. Warm white feels relaxed. Cooler white suits kitchens and work areas.

Ask about the dimmer. Not every LED works with every dimmer, so matching them avoids flicker and buzzing. We check this before fitting.

How do you handle downlights, insulation and ceilings?

Recessed lights sit inside the ceiling space, where heat builds up. Where there is ceiling insulation, the fitting and the insulation need to be installed with the right clearances and covers. Covering a light the wrong way can cause overheating, so this is not a job for guesswork.

Many Darwin homes have a raised, ventilated roof with louvres. Access varies, and some ceilings are lightweight or sheeted in ways that need care when cutting holes.

Before we cut a single hole, we agree the layout with you so you do not end up with a ceiling that looks like a golf course. Fewer, better placed lights often look better than a lot of small ones. If a room has old wiring, we may suggest rewiring work before adding new fittings.

Outdoor lights face rain, humidity, insects and sun. Look for fittings with a suitable weather rating and corrosion-resistant materials. Cheap fittings often rust, fill with water or fail early, and a failed fitting can trip the safety switch.

  • Use weatherproof fittings and sealed connections.
  • Run cables properly, with protection where they are exposed.
  • Choose warm light to reduce insect attraction.
  • Put lights on sensors or timers to save power.
  • Keep fittings out of reach of sprinklers where possible.

Garden lights are often low voltage, powered by a transformer. Place the transformer out of the weather and make sure it is on a protected circuit. We can also add lighting near your parking area, close to any EV charger you plan to fit.

How long does it take, and what affects the price?

A single fan or a few downlights can be done in a short visit. A full house of lights, or a garden scheme with cable runs, takes longer. We will tell you when we have seen the site.

The price depends on the number and type of fittings, who supplies them, whether new wiring or switches are needed, access to the ceiling, the height of the ceilings, and whether any older circuits need work. Fittings you buy yourself may be cheaper, but check with us first. A poor-quality fitting can cause a lot of trouble for the money it saves.

We provide a written quote and explain what is included. Ask any tradesperson to show their NT electrical licence and insurance. For emergencies like a failed light with burning smell, see emergency electrician, or start from the home page.

What do you need?

Questions about electrical in Darwin

How many downlights does a room need?

There is no single number. It depends on the size of the room, the ceiling height, the brightness of each light and how you use the space. As a rough idea, fewer well-spaced lights combined with lamps or pendants often look better than many closely spaced ones. We suggest a layout before cutting the ceiling.

Can you install a ceiling fan where there is none now?

Usually yes. The fan needs a solid fixing point, a power supply and a switch. In some ceilings, a brace has to be added in the roof space to hold the weight. We check the ceiling first and explain what is needed, then quote for the installation in writing.

Are LED lights worth it in the tropics?

LEDs use much less power than older halogen lights and give off less heat. That is a real benefit in a hot climate, because the air conditioner does not have to work as hard. Choose quality fittings and match them to the dimmer, so they last and do not flicker.

What lights suit a verandah with louvres?

Look for fittings rated for outdoor or damp use, with sealed housings. Wall lights, ceiling lights and fans designed for open areas stand up better to rain blown in through louvres. Place them thoughtfully so they light the space without glare or attracting too many insects.

Do I need an electrician to change a light fitting?

In general, fixed wiring work must be done by a licensed person in the Northern Territory. Replacing a fitting involves live circuits and connections. Check the current rules with NT WorkSafe, and do not take risks. A licensed electrician can also check that the circuit and the connections behind the fitting are in good shape.
